Mole Identification

  • Moles have cylindrical bodies and their bodies range between 6 and 8 inches long and weighing between 3 and 6 ounces. Females are typically smaller than male moles.
  • Mole eyes are small and hidden behind fur, while the ears are just small ridges in the skin.
  • The fur of a mole is usually dark grey, but can range in color due to living mainly underground.
  • Moles have atrophied hind legs and powerful digging forelegs.
  • Even with a large mole infestation, a mole may never be visisble. Signs can be subtle, such as mounds of dirt that rise a few inches above the ground, lines of dirt or grass crisscrossing a lawn, patches of dead grass that follow a path or pattern, hollow or loose patches of lawn.

Mole Habitat & Breeding

  • Moles live in an underground tunnel system, used to hunt their prey. Under normal conditions the displaced earth is pushed to the surface, resulting in the characteristic molehills.
  • Moles feed mainly on earthworms, but also on insects, centipedes and even mice and shrews.
  • While moles are typically found in tunnel systems, it is not exclusively an underground dweller. Moles have been found to spend a lot of time at the sides of drainage lines and streams but do not inhabit flooded or dry soils.
  • Moles have only one short breeding season in the spring. Mating occurs over a few weeks in March and April, followed by a gestation period of 4–5 weeks. The litter size ranges from 2–7 and they leave the nest after around 4-5 weeks.
